After finding success with my first ever high-rise jean thanks to a smaller fit from Rag & Bone, Tam of Hello, Framboise mentioned in the comments she’s had similar luck with the J.Crew petite high-rise jeans. Intrigued and lured in by this gorgeous distressed charcoal wash, I gave them a try.
I ordered the J.Crew Petite 9″ High-Rise Toothpick Jean in Charcoal Wash, size 23 petite, and my measurements can be found here for reference.

Expecting a skinny jean, I found these to fit like more of a straight leg, which wasn’t quite what I was looking for. Aside from that, this is a really great pair of jeans…
The Petite Fit – this is the best part of these jeans. The well-proportioned high-rise that sits just right. The distressed fading that ends at the right spot on the knee. The ankle length. All perfect! I like my pants to end a little above my ankle, hence the cuffed hem.
The Wash – This is my other favorite part. I’ve been looking for a nice non-legging, rigid denim dark grey wash like this for a while.
The Fabric – This is one place where I wasn’t sure about the jean. I find these higher stretch denim fabrics to never hold up to the hype. I like a 98% cotton at least, and these 92% cotton jeans felt a little too stretchy. They were great when I pulled them on, but after a few minutes, I felt I’d be yanking these up and suffering from baggy legs at the end of the day, especially since the leg didn’t start off all that snug on me from the get-go.
The Skinny vs. Straight Leg Thing – This is what ultimately made me return these. I’m looking for a skinny and these fit me more like a straight. The sales associate who handled my return even said, “yeah, we get that comment every now and then,” which leads me to believe my fellow calf-less sisters have a hard time with this fit.
Verdict – I ultimately ended up returning, but the wash is haunting me. I may pick these up again if I can find my size at a good sale price later, but in the end, they aren’t quite what I’m looking for right now. However, I would still highly suggest to those who may not have the straight leg fit problem. The reviews are stellar, and I admit I may not be giving the fabric a fair chance (I don’t like wearing items I may be returning because I feel it’s rude to return a saggy, stretched garment).
Thanks for reviewing this pair of jeans. I’ve been on the fence for a couple of jcrew denim styles lately but haven’t invested. Lately I have just been preferring high cotton content for the feel of the fabric, breathability, and durability. My current minimum is 98 percent with 2 percent spandex. Most of Jcrew’s styles out now are blends with lower cotton content. Regarding stretch factor, it does seem like a lot of brands are aware of the baggy/stretching out/saggy butt problem now and have taken steps to address it. But I avoid lower cotton content so I can’t offer much feedback on that.
They have had great wash options for their denim in the past and to be fair these jeans look great on you so I get what you mean by having a hard time passing up this pair just based on the color and distressing. I’ve seen older J.Crew denim at thrift stores and the fabric is so much higher quality than what is out now. I’m noticing a general decline in quality at JCrew! This is so disappointing.
I actually am liking a straighter leg and looser fit. It is not as sleek and versatile as a good skinny leg. It actually can look a little frumpy if you pair a loose top with loose jeans. But it is a lot more comfortable! I’ve been able to find a few pairs of jeans that are meant to be “mom jeans” in cropped regular sizing that actually make nice girlfriend/boyfriend style jeans on a petite figure. One that I am tempted to try is this one by lucky brand (stated 26 in inseam) which is not only made in the usa, the denim fabric is also made AND DYED in the usa. It’s not a charcoal wash, but maybe something to watch for.

I remember wearing them years ago and finding a good petite-friendly fit, but this was back in the days when bootcuts reined supreme, so I never tried a skinny or straight style from them. I’ll have to go in store next time I see one and try some on. And yes, that 98% cotton content denim is my fave too! All my rag & bone jeans are 98% and I’ve even been able to find some 99% at Zara (TRF line runs petite-friendly).

Hi, Farrah! They are from Via Spiga (style is called ‘Amica’) and are about three years old at this point. I keep waiting for them to bring this style back because they are the best looking, low profile loafer I’ve ever owned and I need to replace this beat up pair desperately. I really like the Athleta Sculptek skinny jeans. The 0P fits me perfectly (I’m 5’1”, 92lbs). They don’t stretch out at all— I’ve been wearing mine for about a week straight and am in danger of never remembering to wash them.
