How To Convert Kid’s Size Sneakers Into Women’s Sizes

Who doesn’t love a comfy, classic sneaker? And thanks to the athleisure trend, sneakers can be worn with pretty much anything these days. And, if you wear a small women’s shoe size, did you know you can easily convert that into a kid’s size to capitalize on cheaper pricing? Now is also the perfect time to stock up on fresh kicks for fall with all the back to school sales going on. So here’s the little trick I learned during my time as a poor college student scouring for cool kicks on eBay.

To convert your women’s shoe size to kids shoe size:

(your women’s shoe size) – 1.5 = (your kid’s shoe size)

For example, I like a size 4.5 women’s sneaker, so I would calculate my kid’s sneaker size as so:

4.5 (my women’s size) – 1.5 = 3 (my kid’s shoe size)

As always, read the reviews and sizing indicators to see if a brand or style runs big or small. For example, Puma tends to run small so a size 3.5 (kids) works better for me. Adidas tends to run a little bigger, so size 3 (kids) is better for me.

And here are some sweet, sweet kicks available in kid’s sizes to freshen your fall:

Actually a 4.5 lady shoe works out to a 2.5 kiddie shoe. Trust me on this one, I’ve been doing this for 40 years. You might be able to do a 3 in a sneaker if you are wearing a heavy sock.

I agree with you Suz that if you go back to measuring length of the sole in inches most size charts I’ve seen put a women’s 4.5 at a kids 2.5, however in practice I think a 3 can work just as often as a 2 does so I guess the minus 1.5 rule of thumb could be handy. I like the premise of this post a lot. One of the shoes I’ve had the longest and wear the most is a kids shoe I got used for less than $20. Kelly I also enjoyed reading your instagram section post on personal style. I’m on a journey, too. It’s hard! I think there is so much messaging as to how a woman should look that it’s a real challenge to break out of that conditioning and have an individual opinion. Everything is derivative but it’s possible to make a look your own. I’m still figuring it out. It’s been a learning process discovering what I like and don’t like.

  2. I heard from someone at a kid’s shoe store this week when shoe shopping for my littles: that a 5 women’s was a size 3 kids, but I would have to agree more with what you are saying, Kelly. My daughter currently wears a size 4.5/5 women’s and is wearing size 3 .5/4 in kid’s shoes. I wear a 5.5, and I can wear kid’s shoes in a size 4.

The size conversion depends a lot on toe shape for me. I usually wear a ladies’ 4.5, but my toes are really straight across. That means a kids’ 2.5 can pinch if the toe is tapered, but may be just right if it’s round or wider in the toe box. I do find that a lot of size 3 kids’ shoes are too big. Since a lot of my favorite brands no longer make a 4.5 ladies’ shoe, the options for kids’ shoes are really welcome.

  4. Dear Kelly. What a wonderful and beautiful new style of your blog! I absolutely love it. As for kiddo shoes…I am afraid I am the absolute expert there, not by choice, but by size of feet! My challenge is not to find the same shoe for a sharper price, but to to find shoes that do not look like children’s ones at the children’s department. It gets easier over the years and there are some great shops with really cool shoes for women with the smallest of feet that offer online shopping too. Prices are high, but so is service and quality. I am rescued!!! Love, Lieske

If you normally wear women’s shoes and are trying to figure out what youth size would fit you best, the simplest way is to use this equation: your US size minus 2 = your youth size. For example, I wear a US women’s size 8. To find my youth size, I’d do a little simple math — 8-2=6 — to find that I could order a big kids’ size 6 that would likely fit pretty well. However, if you take a close look at our shoe size charts, you’ll notice that the sizing for women and big kids isn’t exactly the same, so if your feet tend to run on the upper or lower edge of your size (i.e. size 8 is sometimes too small for me and 8.5 is sometimes too large), you’ll want to take a look at the chart below, which offers a more detailed range for women-to-youth equivalents. For instance, if you sometimes wear a women’s size 6, and sometimes wear a women’s size 6.5, big kids’ size 4.5 will likely be a perfect fit, because it’s right in between the two. If you tend to stick to one shoe size that almost always works for you, try the larger number in the big kids’ size equivalent, first.

Toddler sizes are WAY different than youth sizes do not order toddler boots they are for kids to age 4-5 youth sizes are from 6-12 those are the ones this thread is talking about I found a really nice pair of size 10 toddler boots. I wear anywhere from a 6.5 to a 7.5, depending on the brand of shoes. Do you think those boots will fit me? I really need to know because the price is too good to pass up and i do not want to be stuck with a pair of shoes that don t fit. Please reply as soon as possible. Thanks.

I just want to say that I’ve just discovered your blog. I love it. Surprisingly it has been eye opening to me about getting garment tailored. I have a hard to fit figure and I’ve not considered it before
